Five people sentenced to prison in China for violating copyright laws

27.09.2011

The Court sentenced the accused to five years of actual prison time as well as a 1.3 million Yuan fine.

The prison sentence was imposed on the men for copying the online game MapleStory. The enquiry established that they had copied the game without the owner’s consent. In addition to spreading the game all over the Internet for three years, the men resold it, giving rise to a massive copyright violation and causing millions worth of damage.

However, this case is far from being unique in China — the country is infamous for violation of IP rights, and similar court cases are becoming commonplace.
